leap seconds have been slowly added to world time for the last 50 years. every few years, we'll add a leap second to accommodate for the discrepancy between the world's actual turning speed and frequency of the cesium atom, used in atomic clocks.

however, the slowing of the earth's rotation, due to excessive water from melted glaciers collecting around the equator, is raising cause for serious concern. scientists are, for the first time, observing negative leap milliseconds - small increments of time that would need to be subtracted from our time-keeping system. by the year 2029, scientists expect to deduct a full leap second, which can and will have extremely dire repercussions.

this marked slow-down is a major cause for concern among environmental scientists and metrologists, as this inevitable negative leap second spells almost certain disaster not only for the climate, but the myriad computer systems that govern our daily lives.

as capitalism and fascism increasingly strangle societal and environmental progress, we are all placated by superficial status signifiers, lulled into an almost hypnotic feedback loop of performance and adulation, however hollow it may be.

even as the end approaches and downfall is inevitable, we remain entranced and hypnotized by these ultimately meaningless and transitory signifiers, continuing to dance, distracted, into oblivion.
